Breaking Away From Linear RP

We all start somewhere in the mmorpg’s that we play. There is an origin, which is the backstory (background, whichever term works for you) that we start with as our starting point in roleplaying.

For alot of roleplayers, it’s like being a character in an “interactive” novel, a movie or a comic book, etc. There are chapters to each player’s journey, as well as episodes. Our virtual “lives” move foreword from there as we interact and (hopefully) roleplay with others.

Role-Playing In A Static World

The Terror of Elwynn

In alot of mmorpgs, virtual worlds are “static” – the world never really changes aside from expansion packs or content patches/updates. Granted, we can do some temporary things, but for the most part it all reverts back by respawns and resets unless said patch, expansion or feature is added to the game “world”.

While persistent, the “physical” world is unwavering to time and player efforts. Role-players starting out sometimes have a similar question…

Steps to Clutter-Free RP

You will notice as you get started or play in an online game that there is -alot- of chatter. You will see/read heaps of spam, less than appropriate language and dashes of game text that will flood your chat tabs. This wall of text just gets in your way when speaking to others, even more so on a RP server.

Here’s an example of what you come up against in World of Warcraft:
