Death Warmed Over: Death Knights II

[Potential Spoilers - so be warned]

All that I am: anger, cruelty, vengeance – I bestow upon you, my chosen knight. I have granted you immortality so that you may herald in a new, dark age for the Scourge.

Gaze now upon the lands below us. The Scarlet Crusade scurries to undo my work, while Light’s Hope stands defiantly against us – a blemish upon these Plaguelands.

They must all be shown the price of their defiance.

You will become my force of retribution.
Where you tread, doom will follow.
Go now and claim your destiny, death knight.
- The Lich King

Your dark path begins here as a Dark Knight Initiate.

As an Initiate, you are sent to train… fighting other failed initiates to prove your “worth” and to punish the fallen. The weak shall perish, so the strong will survive. Your hunger for death and to serve command you to do as the Lich King wills:

It is the will of the Lich King that drives us onward…
None are more aware of this than death knights. Our very existence is intrinsically tied to his very consciousness. Surely you have heard him speak to you -
invading your thoughts…

Can you hear him now? Perhaps it is too early for you…
- Highlord Darion Mograine

You then do battle with the living in New Avalon and Havenshire, The Scarlet Enclave. Home of the Scarlet Crusade and it’s families in relative “safety” – until now.

Your work begins here. No one is above the Lich King’s blade.

Indeed, you are vengeance… you show no mercy, no remorse in what you do. Townsfolk beg for mercy, running scared or attacking in some futile attempt of defense… but mercy is for the weak. All shall perish! As a Death Knight, you can hear the Lich King’s words echo in your mind, whispers that spur you onward to his bidding!

The largest misconception the living have of the Scourge is our penchant for what is considered ‘evil.’ For the sake of demoralization we allow this error to perpetuate, and indeed spread it on our own.

The true nature of The Scourge is our transcendence of the shackles that keep any of the living races from becoming as prosperous as we.

For example: What benefits do emotion and honor really hold? They serve to validate the living, to make them feel ‘good.’ Now, what flaws do they hold? Emotion is directly correlated to the ignorance of logic and reason. Honor is, at most times, the sole perpetrator of able resources fighting a losing battle.

It is baffling even to me that the living can be so unaware of how eager we are to play the part of their villain, to nurture their greatest flaws by becoming the embodiment of all that incites irrational behavior.

Moral ambiguity cannot be ‘cleansed.’ Antipathy cannot be ‘healed’ or ‘assuaged.’ Greed cannot be ‘dispelled’ and wrath cannot be ‘cured.’ We choose to be the embodiment of all these things, and yet there are some still foolish enough to believe that the Scourge can be defeated and removed completely.

So long as the most attractive sins of the living remain our banner flag, there will always be those eager to flock to our will.

I myself was born under this doctrine.
— from The Decree of the Scourge, Chapter 2, By Kel’Thuzad

Though the spark of life has been extinguished inside you, can the spark of “humanity” also be so easily cast out as well?

Is there a chance of redemption? Or has the die been already cast?

That remains to be seen.

Fantastic article, Sullivan. It left me thinking a little more about the RP decisions for my own death knight.

I think I’ve thought of something that’ll hopefully be entertaining and fun to play. It may also be original, but only time can tell!

Regardless, wonderful job breaking down the psyche of the death knight. I hope that many people take your advice and don’t simply try to burn down the Stormwind orphanage as a way to communicate their rage.

Thank you! I hope it helps others.
