Making A Role-Playing Guild I
Thinking of making a RP guild?

Sometimes you can’t find the role-playing guild you were wanting to join. You may consider making one. An earlier article covered some very good ideas on becoming a good guild. Here’s some other ideas and things to consider for RP guilds and how to get started:
Some articles from Blizzard regarding guilds:

“Must haves” for a RP guild:
Direction: Have an idea or ideal in mind. What is your guild about anyway? Does it have a IC purpose or goal? This helps form the image that you would like for your guild to take on, giving it it’s own “persona”.
Guild Backstory and Storyline: This also helps solidify your guild and motives. This also helps define the folks you are looking for in your guild and mindset. It also helps to develop the guild as it grows and matures. This can also be influenced by the type of RP your guild wishes to do.
A Solid Name: Sure, Flaming Wombats sounded like a good guild name at 3am… but will it really capture what you wanted to do? The guild’s name should reflect your direction or work with it – not against it. Check and do some research if you are using lore information. It may help alot. Make your name unique and don’t rip off another’s – it’s very bad form.
The Guild Tabard: When you get the gold, the tabard should also help validate the direction. Look at different combinations and see what fits. Ask guildmates for input – it helps make the guild a team effort and includes folks. As with names, try to come up with a unique design and do not intentionally copy another guild’s look.

IC Conduct/Policy: This can relate with the direction or goal for your guild. It also helps give guild members a guide to how to represent your guild. Guild drama can be addressed also – while some drama is good and sparks storylines and such, it can also damage the guild.
Have a IC channel. You can use the guild channel or make a private channel for this. This helps to have guild storylines while scattered about the map. IC ways to do this can be as simple as using your Hearthstone to “tune in” to your guildmates to mord elaborate items being used as “channellers” or fantasy/engineered cellphones. *grin*
Good People. Good folks help make a good guild. It’s that simple. Good teamwork and helping one another is a strong part of having a guild in the first place, so never forget the folks in the guild. I can’t emphasize this enough. *grin*
Have scheduled meetings or gatherings. Weekly, monthly – basically whatever works with your group. That way you can “catch up” with guildmates and discuss guild issues and RP as a group. If the gatherings are open to non-guildfolk, that can with getting other RPers involved and have new friends to RP with. Don’t force folks to join or try to “lure” them to your guild. It can be considered rude and disrespectful.
A Guild Site/Forum. There are free and paid solutions to get a site up to start out. While it could be debated as a must have – it’s extremely helpful for communication. It also gives new guild members information on guild policy and conduct. Look for information and make sure they are a good choice for your guild.
Free sites can have ads and pop-ups, which turn off people, but you may find a great “home” for your guild on the cheap. There are also free and paid hosting for clans/guilds as well. Again, look before leaping. You may look into a blogging solution or get your own domain name and hosting. The factors overall are price, ease of use and control. I’ll cover some options in a related article soon.
Get out and RP! Have an event or just role-play in town. Don’t stage stuff to show off, just act “normal’ and stay IC. Interact with other folks, even if they don’t RP. Do your best and have fun. Be flexible in your encounters and don’t set a bad example for other role-players. The RP Community is only as good as it’s RPers.
Get The Word Out! Use the Guild Recruitment channel. Don’t blind invite folks. Get to know them through encounters. Add yourself to your server’s RP guild list or wiki. Make a announcement on the server forums so folks know. Advertise your guild IC by having a IC recruitment drive based on your Direction and backstory. Note: Remember to respect others by not spamming channels, harassing folks or disrupting another’s role-playing. Sometimes, however being a good example and being a guild one wants to join is the best in-game advertisement.
Don’t be scared to work with other groups/guilds. That’s another issue that stagnates guilds. Mingle, interact and network – it could liven things up and make the “world” more immersible for role-playing.
While these will greatly help, it will come down to you, your guildmates and working together to make a successful guild. If you decide to go this route, I wish you luck and hope I helped.
